Homosexuality in the Islamic world has a rich tradition expressed through stories and poetry, despite being forbidden. While not widely discussed, there were instances of same-sex relationships among monarchs and their courtiers.

Sufi poetry also mentions love between men, but the nature of this love is debated. Female homosexuality was less mentioned, but there are some references. Homosexuality was common – and criminalized – but charges were rarely brought up.
